Abstract: Root is an indispensable organ for plant growth and development, which could not only fix and support the plant body, but also absorb water and minerals from soil. In the life cycle of plant root, sugar plays dual roles as nutrients and signaling molecules, and combines with plant hormones to affect root growth and development. In recent years, the regulation mechanisms of sugar on the growth and development of plant roots had been reported. The author reviewed the influence of sugar on the root growth and development, and summarized sugar-regulated mechanisms from sugar signaling transduction and the interactions between sugar and plant hormones in plant root growth and development, proved some valuable information for the continuous research on sugar-regulated mechanisms in plant root.
