Evaluation and Correlation Analysis of Eggplant Germplasms Main Characters

Abstract: In order to select purplish red and long eggplant with high yield, cold tolerance and is suitable for cultivation in south China, characters such as plant height, maturity period, fruit color, weight per fruit, yield per plant and fruit shape etc. of 15 accessions of domestic eggplant germplasm were described, and parthenocarpy of the eggplant germplasms was also identified. Correlation of the main characters was analyzed and results showed that the yield per plant had a very significant correlation with the longitudinal diameter of fruit and the weight per fruit, the correlation coefficient was 0.910 and 0.880, respectively; the plant height and fruit shape index showed a very significantly positive correlation (r=0.740); the correlation between maturity period and flower color was significant, which meant that the maturity period was late-ripening when flower color was purple. On the whole, the yield per plant of ‘Qingfeng No.2’ was significantly higher than that of the control, however, the main stem and fruit calyx of ‘Qingfeng No.2’ had some prickles, which caused inconvenient to pick eggplants, and ‘Qingfeng No.2’ did not have the ability of parthenocarpy. Though the yield per plant of ‘Chunxiu’ and ‘Gongniuchangqie’ were almost as high as that of the control, ‘Chunxiu’ and ‘Gongniuchangqie’ had the abilities of parthenocarpy which made them normally bear under high or low temperature stress, while the control did not have the ability of parthenocarpy. So ‘Chunxiu’ and ‘Gongniuchangqie’ are better than the control and have broad prospects in South China.
