Advances in Crocin Biosynthesis and CCD Gene Family

Abstract: Crocin is an apocarotenoid compound and the main active ingredient of saffron (Crocus sativus) which is a traditional Chinese precious medicine. In order to analyze the biosynthesis pathway of crocin and the function of genes, this paper summarized the structure of crocin, the biosynthesis process and the precursor substance of crocin, and the function and expression of carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase (CCD) gene family (CCD1, CCD4, CCD7, CCD8). Finally, the problems of studies on the pathway of crocin biosynthesis and key genes at present stage were raised. And we think that along with the development of molecular biology techniques, many genes in crocin synthetic pathway would be identified, and the synthetic pathway of crocin would be defined.
