Abstract: The authors selected maize as the research object and took Huanxian—a typical arid area in Gansu Province as the study area, compared film mulching with no film mulching (as the control), adopted maize suitability index method, evaluated maize suitable planting area based on determination of hierarchical evaluation model of maize suitability and evaluation index and the membership degree. The results showed that the fully covered double furrow sowing cultivation could effectively maintain soil moisture and nutrients compared with traditional open field cultivation, improved soil moisture content and the effective accumulated temperature, significantly increased the high suitable planting area for maize, and had obvious yield increasing effect. The high suitable planting area increased by 51368.57 hm2 (25.81%) compared with that of conventional cultivation. The suitable planting area decreased by 21566.2 hm2 (10.82%), the barely suitable planting area decreased by 16975.1 hm2 (8.53%) and the unsuitable planting area reduced by 12827.2 hm2 (6.45%).
