  • Received:2017-12-05 Revised:2017-12-25 Accepted:2018-01-02 Online:2019-03-26 Published:2019-03-26

Abstract: Roses hold high symbolic value and great cultural importance in different societies throughout human history. They are widely used as garden ornamental plants, as cut flowers, and for the production of essential oils for the perfume and cosmetic industries. Opening and senescence of rose flower is still an unsolved problem in the world of floriculture industry and the mechanism behind the onset of the very early events still remains to be elucidated. In this review, we comment on the physiological and molecular mechanism on flower buds opening and senescence of roses. Physiological and genetic factors regulating rose flowering and senescence were discussed. Furthermore, we analyzed the effects of hormones, water metabolism, sugar metabolism, respiration, antioxidant system and other physiological processes during rose flower senescence, and provide some ideas for future breeding direction of cut rose flowers.
