Effects on Photosynthetic Capacity and Stomatal Opening of Maize Leaves: Exogenous ABA Under Drought Stress

Abstract: This study is to investigate the effects of exogenous ABA on photosynthesis and stomatal opening of maize leaves under drought stress. The excellent maize variety ‘Zhengdan 988’ was used as the material, the changes of photosynthesis, stomatal opening and chlorophyll content of maize seedlings at different time points were studied under PEG treatment, exogenous ABA treatment and ABA+PEG treatment. The results showed that the photosynthesis rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll content of the three treatments were lower than that of CK, and the number of stomatal closure was higher than that of CK. The four indicators of ABA+PEG treatment were between PEG and ABA treatment which indicated that maize reduced transpiration by closing the stomata in order to maintain the growth and development under drought stress. Exogenous ABA can increase the number of stomatal closure and chlorophyll content under drought stress, which reduce water loss and increase the photosynthesis rate of plants under drought stress, and finally improve the drought resistance of the plants.
