Abstract: Subsurface wastewater infiltration system (SWIS) has natural advantages in the treatment of decentralized wastewater compared with the traditional sewage treatment processes, and attracts extensive attention and deep research. The removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total phosphorus (TP) are relatively higher by SWIS, while lower nitrogen removal rate needs to be improved. The influencing factors of nitrogen removal, such as oxidation reduction potential (ORP), carbon source, operation performance and external environment, were introduced in detail in this paper. The strengthening measures were also summarized, and the research direction was put forward in addition. Nitrogen removal rate could be strengthened by weight sequencing of influencing factors, combined application of multiple strengthening measures and functions, and the improvement of the performance of microorganisms, which could enrich the theory meaning of nitrogen removal and expand the application scope of the SWIS.
