Abstract: The effects of relay intercropping on the biomass and yield of Pseudostellaria heterophylla were studied to provide some reference for the proper cultivation of this important Chinese medicinal herb. With P. heterophylla monoculture as the control, two relay intercropped treatments of soybean and maize were set up to test the effects of relay intercropping on the biomass and yield of P. heterophylla by pot culture experiments that carried out in two consecutive growth seasons. Compared with monoculture, relay intercropping reduced the shoot biomass, improved the total biomass, and significantly increased both root-shoot ratio and yield of P. heterophylla. Relay intercropping enhanced the distribution of photosynthetic product to root, contributed to the increment of yield, and relay intercropped soybean and maize had similar effect on increasing the yield of P. heterophylla. The yield increment of P. heterophylla was mainly due to the increase of the root quantity, although the single root biomass of P. heterophylla was improved to some extent in relay intercropping system. In order to obtain better yield and enhance comprehensive income, P. heterophylla is recommended to be relay-intercropped with suitable crops in actual production.
