Abstract: The giant spiny frog (Quasipaa spinosa), distributed in southern China and northern Vietnam, is a threatened species with high commercial and nutritious value. In the paper, from the perspectives of taxonomy and geographical distribution, as well as investigation, collection and protection of germplasm resources of the giant spiny frog, current status of genetic diversity researches on morphology, cytogenetic and molecular genetics of the giant spiny frog were introduced. Meanwhile the physiological and biochemical differences of different germplasms were compared. Then the present situation of germplasm innovation was also expounded. Finally, some suggestions on future researches including wild resources investigation, artificial cultivation standard, germplasm innovation and genomics were put forward.
