A Strong Hail Weather: Radar Characteristics and Its Impact on Agriculture in Changzhi

Abstract: To find the cause of hail and its impact on agriculture, the authors used Doppler radar reflectivity, radial velocity, vertical accumulation of liquid water content (VIL) products, combining with high and low air circulation situation and ground data, to analyze a strong hail weather process on June 13, 2016 in Changzhi. The results showed that: (1) the hail weather was made by the combined action of high altitude cold trough and warm low pressure; (2) strong echo and three body strong scattering (TBSS) had good indicative significance on early warning of hail; convergence and divergence of velocity could judge echo for the future development trend and enhance forecasting accuracy; when there was a certain continuous TBSS, TBSS could be used as the auxiliary index of strong hail warning; VIL was one of the effective tools for identifying hail and had a good role in forecasting the hail; (3) strengthening the hail monitoring, to realize“surface”warning by timely monitoring “points”was an effective supplementary means to reduce the hail damage to agricultural production.
