The Traditional Use of Agricultural Plant Resources by the Bulang People in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province

Abstract:

In order to clarify plants utilization by Bulang people in Xishuangbanna prefeture, Yunnan Province, the types of plants and the use patterns of agricultural plant resources by Bulang people were extensively investigated and studied through the methods of ethnobiology and cultural anthropology and so on. The results showed that traditional use of plants by the Bulang people mainly concerned the edible, medicinal, ornamental, religious worship and cultural use, involving 67 family 201 genus or subspecies of plants, which of 7 family and 22 genus of crops and oil plants, 24 family and 107 genus of garden edible vegetable plants, 19 family and 24 genus of wild vegetable plants,15 family and 26 genus of fruit plants, 13 family and 13 genus of medicinal plants and 7 family and 9 genus of culture and religion plants. The role and significance of traditional culture in the use and management of local plant diversity by Bulang people were discussed, as well as the problems existed. As to the relationship between local traditional cultural knowledge and the conservation of plant diversity, the related recommendations were proposed.
