Evaluation of Chilling Tolerance of Melon Germplasm Resources

Abstract: The aims are to screen the chilling-tolerant germplasm resources of melon and lay a foundation for melon chilling-tolerance breeding. In this study, 31 melon germplasms were used as materials. During the germination stage, the seeds were cultivated with 18℃ chilling stress. The relative germination percentage, relative germination index and relative vigor index were calculated and then analyzed by subordinate function analysis and cluster analysis. During the seedling stage, the seedlings of 31 melon germplasms were treated with 9℃/6℃ (day/night) chilling stress. The chilling injury index was calculated and then analyzed by cluster analysis. The results showed that, at germination stage, 31 melon germplasms could be divided into 5 chillingtolerance types, including high-tolerant type (2 lines), tolerant type (7 lines), moderately tolerant type (16 lines), susceptible type (3 lines) and high-susceptible type (3 lines). At seedling stage, 31 melon germplasms could be classified into 5 chilling-tolerant types, including high-tolerant type (2 lines), tolerant type (4 lines), moderately tolerant type (11 lines), susceptible type (10 lines) and high-susceptible type (4 lines).
