The Application of Excel VBA Array in the Design of Matching Test List for Maize Inbred Lines

Abstract:

The core of maize inbred line matching test is the determination of combining ability. How to input a huge amount of data of inbred lines and testers into the computer quickly in the design of test list, and how to edit the data to form a list of the field trials quickly need to be considered by every breeder. In this study, a coding method for matching test of maize inbred lines was proposed by using VBA technology, to realize quick data input, optimize the tedious operation with repeated steps and avoid human operation errors, thus achieving automation and high working efficiency. The results show that, compared with the conventional basic Excel method, VBA method is simple to operate and easy to learn, with higher accuracy and speed. With the expansion of the scale of the inbred lines, the advantages of VBA method has become more obvious. By using the VBA method programming scheduling, a large number of manual operation steps could be simplified. It is suggested that VBA method should be popularized in the design of maize inbred line matching test.
