Abstract: Martianus dermestoides Chevrolat were known as Jiu longchong, which is an important medicinal and feedstuff insects. Study on its suitable growing environment and artificial diets are the keys to achieve its large scale breeding of Martianus dermestoides Chevrolat. In this paper, under constant or changing temperature conditions, those indicators such as the larvae and adult morphology, active degree, feeding habits, growth cycle, reproduction and growth dynamics were observed on those M. dermestoides Chevrolat feeding on different artificial diets. Results showed that among those two factors which were temperature and artificial diets, artificial diets have the most significant influence on the development of M. dermestoides Chevrolat. Using grain as feedstuff could shorten the reproductive cycle of M. dermestoides Chevrolat, advance their sexual maturity time, make the interval of two times spawning shorter, and let them finish laying all their eggs in a relatively shorter time. Study also found that M. dermestoides Chevrolat breeding in warm and humid environment were more active. Different stages of M. dermestoides Chevrolat living in cold and dry conditions growing slowly and development been delayed.
