Abstract: A systematic study was conducted to determine the effects of ethylene inhibitor and pomoter on growth, protective enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation of maize under water stress and rewatering conditions. The results showed that, ethephon treatments were profitable to control plant height, and promote root weight and biomass under light drought stress, while biomass of AgNO3 treatments decreased compared with control under light drought and heavy drought stress conditions. Ethephon treatments could depress MDA synthesis and relative electric conductivity, reduced soluble protein content, and the effects of AgNO3 on MDA synthesis, relative electric conductivity and soluble protein content was contrast to that of ethephon treatments. Ethephon treatments could promote superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peoxidase (POD) activities, while AgNO3 could depress SOD, CAT and POD activities.
