Effect of Underplanted Trees in Pinus massoniana Plantation on Growth and Soil Nutrients

Abstract: Abstract: Growth and soil nutrients characteristics of five underplanted trees in Pinus massoniana plantation, including Dalbergia hupeana、Illicium henryi、Quercus phillyraeoides、Ormosia hosiei and Phoebe chekiangensis, were studied in Kaihua, Zhejiang Province. The results showed that survival rate, height, diameter at breast height and crown width of D. hupeana and I. henryi were higher than the other three species. Compared to pure P. massoniana plantation, soil nutrients condition of the irregular forests were greatly improved, expecially soil available nutrients significantly increased in the irregular forests. Analysis of multi-factor principal component indicated that the order of soil nutrients condition for the five underplanted tree species was Q. phillyraeoides>I. henryi>O. hosiei>D. hupeana>P. chekiangensis. As a whole, I. henryi was the optimum tree species underplanted in P. massoniana plantation among the five species.
