Analysis of Severe Hail Event in Huludao City Based on Ingredients Method

Abstract: In order to improve the prediction accuracy of strong convection, the ingredients method and multiple observation materials were used to analyze the hail weather. By using general observation data, wind profiler data, Doppler weather radar data etc., the authors adopted the forecast method (ingredients method) based on components, and analyzed severe hail which happened in the afternoon of June 1, 2015 in Huludao City. The results indicated that Liaoning Province was controlled by the northeast vortex. The upper level jet and the low level shear line were existed. The atmospheric boundary layer was fully mixed after ground heating in the afternoon, which provided a strong and unstable stratification. The low level vapor convergence and the strong deep vertical wind shear brought benefit to the emergence and development of the highly organized supercell storm. The sounding features of the west of Liaoning had significant effects, indicating the weather change in the afternoon. By fully using the ingredients method with general observation data, and applying radar extrapolation products, the hail can be forecasted few hours in advance.
