The Mechanism of Plant Odor Reaction of Scarab: Research Advances

Abstract:

Scarabs are harmful to horticultural crops and not easy to control. At present, chemical control is the mainstay, but the large application amount of chemical pesticides could cause environmental pollution and pesticide residue. The use of agricultural measures as intercropping trap or repel plant is an effective way to control chafers. Based on the plant avoidance phenomenon of chafer, we reviewed the research progress of the motility mechanism of the chafer on plant odor from the aspects of plant volatiles gas composition and screening, antennae structure of the chafer, olfactory related protein and so on. It indicated that the plant could be used for trapping or repellent of the chafer, and intercropping of different crops in field could prevent and control the chafer; the most widely used method for evaluating and screening the volatile odor which had a role in the chafer was electroantennography and related techniques; the research on various olfactory proteins of chafers mainly focused on the function and localization of odor-binding proteins and chemosensory proteins. Through this review, we summarize the research focus of chafer and plant interaction, and provide a direction for future research.
