Abstract:

To promote Indonesian maize industrial development, and serve China’s national strategies such as the “Belt and Road Initiative” and “Science and Technology to Support Diplomacy”, Maize Research Institute of Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences (MRI-SAAS) carried out programs such as localization of maize breeding in Indonesia, collection of new maize varieties and integration of new cultivation technologies, and construction of an Indonesia-China maize industry park and so on. Basic materials of maize breeding were obtained by combining excellent germplasms from China’s Huang-huai-hai region with Indonesian germplasms rich in tropical genetic background. 10 excellent hybrid combinations attended the approval trial to get certificates of new maize varieties in Indonesia. Shandong Province accomplished the first agricultural technology overseas training, and an on-site exhibition of new maize varieties and cultivation technologies in Indonesia. A high-yield record of 13.70 t/hm2 was achieved in the rainy season of Indonesia. A maize industry park with 50 hm2 area is now playing an important role for the fast development of Indonesian maize industry. Through the mode of cooperation between science and enterprises, China’s agricultural enterprises could make full use of their advantages and introduce new maize varieties and new technologies to Indonesia, which will accelerate the development of Indonesian maize industry and serve the “Belt and Road Initiative”.
