Abstract: In order to clarify the effects of different cultivation and water retaining agent on summer maize on dry land in eastern Henan province,‘Zhengdan 958’was used as the planting material to research the effects of furrow sowing, water retaining agent and straw mulching on summer maize growth and development. The results showed that: compared to the control, all the measures promoted summer maize emergence rate, root numbers, LAI and dry matter accumulation. In the earlier stage of summer maize growth, the measure of sowing mulching water retaining agent had the best effect, followed by furrow sowing water retaining agent; but in the late stage, the measure of sowing mulching water retaining agent had the best effect, followed by mulching water retaining agent. Different treatments increased the grain yield by 9.59%-54.6%, the yield increment was the greatest (54.6% ) by the sowing mulching water retaining agent, followed by mulching retaining agent (51.03% ).This study showed that sowing mulching water retaining agent promoted the summer maize emergence and root status, promoted the LAI and dry matter accumulation, increased the grain yield of summer maize.
