Abstract: Rice false smut is a fungal disease caused by Ustilaginoidea virens infecting the spikelets of rice. Now, this disease is considered as one of the main fungal diseases in major rice producing areas worldwide, and it can damage the yield and quality of rice seriously. Since the disease occurs lightly at an early stage, it is often ignored. In order to strengthen general understanding of the disease, the authors started with the research progress of rice false smut at home and abroad in recent years, reviewed the pathogen’ biological characteristics, infection process, molecular biology, ustiloxins, comprehensive control measures of the disease and so on, and analyzed the existing problems and made an outlook on future research work. The results could provide certain reference for revealing pathogenic mechanism of the pathogen and the prevention and control of rice false smut.
