Abstract: Rice stripe disease is one of the most serious viral diseases in the temperate and subtropical regions of Japan, China, and Korea. The disease is caused by rice stripe virus (RSV) and transmitted by the small brown plant-hopper, Laodelphax striatellus. Since 2000, rice stripe disease has reappeared in the middle and lower Yangtze River in China, and has been responsible for the greatest loss in rice production in this region. The progress in the current spread situation, the screening of the resistant resources, mapping of the resistant genes and the breeding of the resistant varieties to RSV was summarized in this paper. Finally, the prospect on the breeding of highly and persistently resistant varieties to RSV was also discussed.
