Garden Variety Resources of Weeping Type Japanese Maple in the World

Abstract: ‘Japanese maple’ is a general term for all kinds of species in Acer in Japan. Breeding selection dated back to“江户”times, about 300 years ago. The existing number of varieties estimated about 600, including weeping type more than 40 and accounting for 7% of all species. The weeping type maple was introduced to western countries since eighteen twenties. The existing number of varieties in western countries was about 600, including weeping type more than 90 and accounting for 15.3% of all species. Garden varieties mainly originated from the species and varieties of Acer palmatum Thunb, Acer amoenum Carr, Acer amoenum var. matsumurae(Koidz.)Makino, most of them were seedling selection and branch sport selection. The garden variety ‘Japanese maple’ was favored by the lovers from all over the world, especially weeping type variety was received much concern.
