Maize/Vegetable Relay Intercropping Modes in Northern Shanxi: Efficiency Analysis

Abstract: [Objective] The study was designed to analyze the three kinds of maize/vegetable relay intercropping mode that were marketed in North Shanxi Province, and to provide the theory base for local farmers when they make choice on the three relay intercropping mode. [Method] The market risks assume was summarized according to the production and efficiency of three relay intercropping mode by three years" test and market trend. [Result]The gross yield of maize/ Brassica oleracea L. shows the greatest volatility in this study, so the market risk is great. The gross yield of maize/Brassica juncea var. is most stable. On the premise of sufficient labor force, corn/ Phaseolus vulgaris is the mode with high gross profit. [Conclusion] In the actual production, farmers can choose the appropriate relay intercropping mode in order to achieve the goal of increasing revenue according to their ability to resist market risk and the prejudgment of market conditions.
