Advances of Researches on the Silicon Uptake and Transporters in Plants

Abstract: This article generalized the characteristics of silicon content, form, distribution and function in higher plant, expounded the researches about the silicon uptake site in roots, the uptake mechanisms and selecting the rice mutants defective in Si uptake. The characteristics were reviewed in details such as activities of 9 silicon transporters discovered in 4 kinds of higher plants, including OsLsi1, OsLsi1, OsLsi1 in rice; ZmLsi1, ZmLsi1, ZmLsi1 in maize; HvLsi1 and HvLsi2 in barley, CmLsi1 in pumpkin. It summarized the specialization and cooperation mechanisms of various silicon transporters on the whole level of the rice, maize and barley. It needed to broaden the research objects in order to correctly and fully understand the transporters and its mechanisms.
