Abstract:

The objectives of the study are to evaluate the combining ability improvement and breeding potential value of recombination lines from maize landraces ‘Worihuang’ and inbred line ‘Wo30’, and explore the novel methods to utilize excellent genes in landraces. Five backbone inbred lines in southwest China and five introduced inbred lines were used as testers. ‘Wo30’ and eight recombinant lines were used as tested lines, the eight recombinant inbred lines were ‘W1’, ‘W2’, ‘W3’, ‘W4’, ‘W5’, ‘W6’, ‘W7’ and ‘W8’, respectively. The combining ability and heterosis of ‘Wo30’ and eight recombinant lines were analyzed by NCⅡ design. The results demonstrated that the general combining ability (GCA) of plant height, ear height, ear length, row number per ear, grain number per row, 100 grain weight, bald tip length, seed rate and yield per plant were significant or extremely significant among ‘Wo30’ and eight recombinant lines. The order of GCA effect value of yield per plant was ‘W1’> ‘W2’> ‘W8’> ‘Wo30’> ‘W4’> ‘W5’> ‘W3’> ‘W6’> ‘W7’. The GCA effect value of comprehensive traits of recombinant lines ‘W1’, ‘W2’ and ‘W8’were significantly higher than that of ‘Wo30’, which had good breeding potential. The lost valuable genes can be re-introduced into the recombinant inbred lines by mixed pollen pollination between the best lines of ‘Wo30’and ‘Worihuang’, which can obtain recombinant lines with a higher combining ability. It is beneficial to the exploitation and utilization of excellent local germplasm.
