Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of dietary supplementation of effective microorganisms (EM) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and fecal ammonia emission of BALB/C mice. A total of 120 BALB/C mice (4-week-old) with 60 males and 60 females were randomly divided into 4 groups with 6 replicates in each group (3 replicates for male and 3 replicates for female) and 5 mice in each replicate. EM added into diet of each group (groupⅠ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ, and Ⅳ) was 0, 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg, respectively. The experiment lasted for 7 weeks, including one week of adaption period and 6 weeks of experimental period. The results showed that dietary addition of 400 and 600 mg/kg EM significantly increased dry matter and ether extract digestibility of BALB/C mice (P<0.05), but had no significant effect on the digestibility of other nutrients (P>0.05). EM had no significant effect on the growth performance and fecal ammonia emission of BALB/C mice (P>0.05). It is concluded that dietary supplementation of EM could improve nutrient digestibility (dry matter and ether extract) of BALB/C mice and could not reduce ammonia emission, and the recommended supplementation is 400 mg EM per kilogram diet.
