Abstract: The concentrations of macronutrients in samples of surrounding soils and plant tissues of veteran oriental arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco) trees in Zhongshan Park in Beijing were measured. The relationship between the concentrations of the nutrients and the vigor of trees was analyzed using statistics methods. The results show that the pH, water content, and the concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg of soils are not significantly different. In samples of roots, except for the concentration of K in the dormant season, concentrations of other macronutrients are not significantly different. The concentrations of Ca in leaves are significantly different between groups of trees with different ages in the growing season. Differences in concentrations of other macronutrients, chlorophyll, and total soluble sugar in leaves are not significant in different groups of oriental arborvitae trees no matter it is in growing or dormant season. In conclusion, it is difficult to use the concentrations of nutrients of veteran trees to represent their health status. The judgment of their health status has to rely on visual inspection in the near future.
