Abstract: In order to understand the relative importance of plastic film mulching and seedling and transplanting on the improvement of growth and yield of middle-late corn in cold and arid region, a field experiment with completely randomized block design was employed to analyze and compare the effects of different cropping patterns on the maize growth process, plant height variation, ear height and yield component characters. The results showed that the growth of maize covered with plastic film was significantly earlier than seedling and transplanting maize. Yield of film-mulching maize increased by 32.0% compared to direct sowing in the same period (May 2nd); while the maize yield of seedlings and transplanting to farmland covered with film was 34.7% higher than direct sowing maize. The reason of mulching treatment increasing maize yield was mainly due to the increase of weight per hundred kernels. Compared with each treatment, transplanting made plant height and ear height low, but film mulching (including transplanting to farmland covered with film) could improve yield and decrease the length of bare tips. In overall consideration of input and output, film covering is one of good planting ways of spring maize in cold and arid regions of Shanxi Province.
