Evaluation of Drought Tolerance Potential of 37 Maize Varieties

Abstract: In order to evaluate the drought tolerance potential of 37 maize varieties, the author evaluated and analyzed of the plant traits and yield traits in maize by 4 kinds of water supply treatments. The results showed that water stress effects were significant or very significant on 6 traits including spike length, bald tip length, grain number per row, 100 kernel weight, ASI and yield per plant. Water stress could result in the extension of maize ASI, the increase of bald tip length, the decrease of seed setting rate, kernel number per row, 100 grains weight and the yield per plant. Comprehensive evaluation result with fuzzy membership function method indicated that ‘Banghaoyu 509’, ‘Zhongyu 9’, D36, BH0310 and D30 had stronger drought tolerance, while D23, D3, D26 and BH3404 had lower drought tolerance.
