Abstract:

Aphid is a worldwide pest with small body size and large surface to body ratio. Its growth, development and outbreak are closely related to environmental humidity. Numerous studies have shown that drought stress had a direct impact on the biological characteristics of aphids including life history, developmental rate, migration characteristics, and reproductive capacity; meanwhile, drought stress also activated plant defense system, and affected growth, development, and parasitic behavior of natural enemies to further affect the development of aphids. To adapt drought environment, aphids have developed a range of drought resistance mechanisms including osmoregulation, epidermal hydrocarbon synthesis, and related enzyme systems response. This paper reviews the direct and indirect effects of drought stress on aphids and the mechanisms of aphids’ adaptation to drought. It will help us to propose aphid integrated control strategies.
