Abstract:

To improve the yield and quality of saffron in China, we analyzed the studies on mother bulbs size, buds number, cultivation mode, cultivation density and depth, fertilization methods and types, disease control, flowering regulation, tissue culture rapid propagation and detoxification, genetic breeding, filament processing and storage, and summarized the research progress of cultivation, breeding and postharvest management of saffron. We pointed out that China lacks the standard classification of saffron bulbs, and the specifications of high-yield and high-quality production techniques. The bottlenecks in the production and breeding of saffron should be solved from three aspects: field cultivation, flowering regulation and variety selection. The production technology of saffron should be regulated to ensure the quality of saffron medicinal materials and promote the development of saffron industry.
