Abstract:

The paper aims to research morphological characteristics and classification grade of Wisteria, formulate the test guidelines for distinctness, uniformity and stability for new varieties of Wisteria. 23 morphological characteristics of 88 Wisteria cultivars were observed, such as branches, leaves, flowers and seeds. The coefficient of variation, correlation and principal components were studied, and UPGMA cluster analysis of cultivars was carried out. The results showed that there were significant differences in 16 morphological characteristics among different cultivars, and the coefficient of variation was 10.66%-126.20%. The coefficient of variation within different species was 0.18%-50.76%, and the degree of variation was as follows: W. floribunda (50.76%), W. macrostachya (24.74%), W. sinensis (23.55%), W. frutescens (21.64%), W. brachybotrys (21.40%), W. × formosa (19.81%) and W. × valderi (0.18%). The 88 cultivars were divided into 4 groups by UPGMA cluster analysis. Each group had certain characteristics and there were differences among the groups. The 23 morphological characteristics reflected the variation of different species or cultivars. Species was the basis for classification of Wisteria cultivars. Flowering period, inflorescence length, flower color, mature leaf color or corolla butterfly shape could be used as important standards for the four-level classification.
